Thanks to Thomas Cauley, international director, and the people of Rose Creek Village, Tennessee, for hosting a seminar and demonstration of Shorinji-Ryu Karatedo on November 4, 2006. On 12th August 2006 I was fortunate enough to witness a Karatedo seminar conducted by Kyoshi Tom Cauley, here in Memphis, Tennessee. I couldn't believe Mr. Cauley is 63 years old and can still do kata and kihon like a 20 year old. I just want to say that it was a pleasure to see how good technique matures over the years when Karatedo is done correctly for a long time. I just want to give this praise. I was elated to find this web site about Shorinji-Ryu Karate. I was a member of the US Navy and stationed at Misawa Air Base, Japan in 1975. I began my Karate with Mr. Cauley, who was then an Air Force member. The dojo at Misawa was very tough. His "no Nonsense" training led a lot of us to a deeper understanding about Budo and about Japan and her culture. I had the distinct pleasure of being invited, by Sensei Cauley, to visit and train at the Hombu and under, then Headmaster Tokushiro Ogasawara, Cauley's immediate teacher. I still practice the precepts of Karatedo in my Law Practice here in Arizona. My respect and greetings to Sensei Cauley. Bryce Frey Atty at Law Fountain Hills, Arizona

I have known Mr. Cauley since Misawa, Japan and consider him a true friend and Sensei. He taught me a great deal about the true spirit of Karate Do. Today I found notes from Mr. Shibasaki and Mr. Sumi both in Japan and was very pleased that they rememebered our time in Misawa. Mr. Cauley has connected more lives than anyone can tell. I was surfing around the internet search engines and came across this site. It stirred a few memories. During 1972 I was a student of Burt Konzak in Toronto, Canada and we had the opportunity to travel to Hidy Ochiai's tournanment in Binghamton, N.Y. During that trip I met Mr. Cauley and several of his senior students who had come from Dover, Delaware where he was in the Air Force.
His students were strong, well heeled, and demonstrated Budo to it's fullest extent. I was impressed with him and his students and am happy to learn that Mr. Cauley is still kicking and punching today. I just wanted to relate my appreciation and to let you know that man does not know how he affects another in his life.
Very respectfully,

Sensei Thomas Cauley, This is Steve "Kuma" Sulley. I was so glad to see your website!!! I sought out Sensei Cauley on one of his trips to to Alaska. In 1971 Sensei Cauley took me under his wing and created his Alaska Dojo allowed me to teach. In 1972 we sponsored the first Alaskan All Karate-Do tournament. 6 karate schools attended. Our students won every level in kumite and 50% in kata competion. We were fortunate enough to have Sensei Cauley hold Clinic for our students in Alaska to prepare them for the tournament. In 1973 I was transferred to San Antonio and Started a Dojo at Kelly Air Force Base. We had Sensei Cauley instruct clinics on several occasions. I was always impressed with Sensei Cauley, always willing to assist anyone who was willing to sacrifice their time and live the true way of Budo. In 1976 I was assigned to Misawa AB Japan where I was reunited with Sensei Cauley and studied in Japan. We had training on the beach, in the snow, and in the temple. In 1981 I was assigned to Scott AFB were I taught for until 1984. Now I am a Grandfather of 5 and would like to pass on Karate -Do to my Grandchildren. I just want to say thank you to Sensei Cauley my friend, my brother and for the way, you help mold of life and lifetime of memories I will cherish forever. Steve "Kuma" Sulley, Nidan,Shorinji-Ryu

Today I met Mister Cauley at, at all things, a Strategic Planning session for Humphreys County, Waverly, Tennessee. During general conversation, I learned that he was a Karate-Ka. I, too, studied Shotokan Karate from 1965 until present and am ranked as the Rokudan. I was so happy to have had the time to talk to Mr. Cauley today. You never know who you are talking to some time. That is why it is always best to be quiet sometimes. Sincerely, Norman Rusacci

I surfed onto this website while looking for Shorinji-Ryu Karate. I was elated to find that Sensei Cauley is still alive and well and is still teaching Shorinji-Ryu. I was his student at his dojo at Misawa Air Base, Japan during 1967 and 1968. I still remember the dojo with no heat and a concrete floor. Wonder we all did not get ill. I still remember the hard practices, meeting the Headmaster, Mister Ogasawara, practicing at the Honbu in Japan and how much Sensei Cauley pushed us. Today, I am thankful for that hard practice because it has helped get me through some rather hard times. So, Thank you Sensei and GOD Bless. Eddie Mallard Beginner

I am helping Mister Thomas O'Brien about Japan Kata of ShorinjiRyu style. Because the branch of Ogasawara school is Japanese style of ShorinjiRyu. We are doing Japanese kata of the 40 hand and 45 Kobudo kata. This is not as the Shotokan or Shito styles of Japan because of so many more of the kata. Thank you for interest about ShorinjiRyu. What a great web site. My style is Shorin Ji Ryu Kenkokan but I am very familiar with the Ogasawara School of Shorn Ji Ryu Karate-Do. I am also very familiar with the Senior teachers of that school of Karate-Do. Years ago I was fortunate enough to travel to Japan with a company I worked for. I was sent to the Northern Japan area to Misawa Air Base about 1967. I looked for, and found a good Shorin Ji Ryu dojo run by Mr. Cauley when he was in the USAF there. I beleive he was an investigator of some sort. I was happy when he took me to the Honbu and to meet the Headmaster Ogasawara Jiro. I hope Mr. Cauley remembers me because it was a high point in my training. Later, that year, he took me to Tokyo to meet Konishi Shihan. They were wonderful days full of great training opportunities. I recently spoke with Mr. Cauley on the telephone and was happy to find him still teaching Karate-Do and still healthy and active. I just wanted to write this testmonial account of years past. Sensei Cauley, I never knew you as I left Japan in 1977. Possibly you were one of my new students at Sensiei Shoen Fukuda's dojo at Misawa Air Base. I was the primary instructor for Sensei Fukuda at MAB from 1975-77. I consider Sensei Fukuda my friend and brother as we are of the same age and I spent my days in his home with his family. He took my wife as his daughter and I took his children as my own. I achieved a 4th dan before I left Japan and regret the day I left. I wish with all my heart I could be back there right now. What a joy to find this site. I was stationed in Korat Thailand during 1966 with Tom when he was a new Lt. in the USAF. Good supervisor. I was also one of his Karate students when he taught at Camp Sunararee, Thailand; the Thai flying base next door. I remember that he got a medal from the King of Thailand for teaching the first known Thai/American Karate club known. There was also another man there who taught Tae Kwon Do but don't remember his name. I know he was killed in a car wreck though in Thailand. Does anyone out there remember him? He played in the Nit Noy band. It is good to see that Karate is still alive and well with my old teacher. I will call you and talk over old times with you. I am still doing Karate but Shotokan now. It is so good to read entries from so many Shorinji-Ryu Karate-do students around the world. I thought I would add mine to those others. I am the Poland Country Director for Shorinji-Ryu of Ogasawara schools. I traveled to Japan two times in 1968 and 1969 to train with both the Honbudojo and with Mister Thomas Cauley who was in the United States Air Force on northern part of Honshu Island, Japan. I am now the Doctor of Vet Services. I am now owner of the 5dan of Karate-do. I remember some of the American Karate people in Japan during that time with Mister Cauley at his dojo at Misawa. Mister Clifton Phelps was so much help for me but he is long past. Mister Tony Mays, also dead now, was a kind senior for Mister Cauley. I have so sweet memories about Karate-do training in Japan and was so happy when Mister Cauley took me to the Honbudojo of Ogasawara. I am trying to teach the traditional values I gained in Japan. Thank you Sensei Tomaz

I have recently been appointed as the National Director to South Africa for Ogasawara Ha Shorinjiryu Karatedo by Dr. T. Cauley - Chief Instructor International Division. I would just like to add for the record that never in the 30 years of my individual involvement within traditional classic karatedo, have myself and my country ever been accepted with such open arms and respect. It is for myself and the Ogasawara Ha practitioners in South Africa an honour and complete godsend to belong to such incredible masters of the art aswell as the most unique and professional close knit family and 'brotherhood', as far as i am concerned within the world of karatedo. We are without a shadow of a doubt, a league on it's own. To Dr. Cauley and all the Directors at Sohonbu in Japan, we at Ogasawara Ha Shorinjiryu Karatedo Honbu in South Africa...SALUTE YOU ALL!!! May god bless you all and keep you with us for many a year to come. Yours in budo, Kaicho Henri Eksteen.

I was a young lad of 13 when i met sensei cauley at a youth center on misawa airbase. I studied with him at the youth center for a year then was given the unprecedented honor of being ask to join the adult class on security hill. i studied with sensei until he left misawa airbase around 1978. I continue to look back on my time studying with him and reflect what an impact it had on me. Sensei was one of the driving forces in my life that guided me through some very difficult times. I now am a nidan in shito-ryu, but I have never been able, through many attempts, to find a dojo that ever came close to his sumi dojo. I would like to communicate this to him, and I wondered if there was an email or land mail address for him. I assume as he worked in the post office in misawa and was and probably still is a traditional man that he may not have email. i would appreciate any assistance anyone could give me. My email address is foxjg1@hotmail.com. thanx.

The General Director, Teikeishiro Ogasawara, has instructed us to refer to our karatedo system where appropriate as Ogasawara-ha Shorinjiryu Karatedo. The style name Sakugawa Koshiki Shorinjiryu Karatedo has not changed and still appears on official documents. This wider use of the name Ogasawara-ha is intended to reduce confusion with other styles of karatedo using the term Koshiki.

Back in February 2005, I sat and watched the Winter National Karate Tournament at Kennesaw University, Atlanta area. I have been a Karate student since 1984 and was totally impressed with the display of high character, budo attitude, fair play and respect each of the participants showed. The tournament promoters were both Professors at Kennesaw and at the University of Georgia. The Chief judge was also, I learned, a Professor in the past. These gentlemen showed character that I haven't seen in a long time. I just wanted to take this opportunity to express my surprise at finding that Budo still lives in some places. I was able to speak with one of the gentlemen watching with me and learned that the style is Shorinji-Ryu Karatedo and it is very strict and regimented. Congratulations to you all and thank you for such a well run event.

I am happy to see this website about Shorinji-Ryu Karate-Do. More rewarding is the fact that I was in Mister Cauley's original American dojo in Hampton, Virginia in 1969 when he first came back from Japan. I can still remember how hard practice was there on Armistead Avenue. I never worked so hard in my life. I have gained his telephone number and we have talked about the old days in Hampton. Karate has really changed since that time. Most folks back then were traditional teachers and Mister Cauley was one of the best, having just come back from Japan. Looking at this website, I can see that that tradition has continued even today. It was really good talking with you on the telephone, Sensei. I hope to visit him or some of his seniors in Georgia or in Ohio. Miguel is in the Dominican Republic now and teaching Karate-Do. Keep up the wonderful work in Shorin-Ji Ryu. Hello I practice a different lineage of Shorinjiryu Karatedo - that of Shinan Kori Hisataka (1907-1988). Kyoshi Cauley was kind enough to leave a message on my website's guestbook, and I am returning the courtesy! This is a great website, and it is a pleasure to look through information about a Shorinjiryu that shares some similar roots, but has a different evolution. I was surprised to find this site about Shorin Ji Ryu Karate. I was a student of Karl Hovey who is a Godan in Shorin Ji Ryu Karate in Fredericksburg, Va. I was able to travel to Dover, Delware in the early 70's and practice at the Sumi Kan (Sensei Cauley's dojo). I remember that he had over 100 students almost every night. I miss those days of the large dojos and the spirit that resonated in them. Respectfully, Stanley Youngblood Halffull1212@aol.com

Just want to congratulate everyone on this nice website. One of the best I have seen lately. I surfed around in it for hours and still couldn't read everything available. My style is Shotokan but studied Shorinjiryu with Mr. Cauley when he had his dojo in Dover, Delaware in 1970. I was a kid then and he probably doesn't remember me because there were about 150 of us there. Anyway, thanks to him and his senior students I have stayed in Karatedo since. I am meeting Mister David Adams when he was living in Florida in Jacksonville. I was in the US Navy there at Cecil Field. Mister Adams was my Sensei and then sometimes Mr. Cauley would come to Jacksonville to do seminar and testing and special training. Sometimes, then, we would go to the University of Central Florida and there to his dojo and work on Saturdays. Now that I am in Miami and out of the US Navy, I miss the brotherly love and togetherness we all shared in Shorinji-Ryu Karate. I still try to practice what I learnt. I am now discovering that Mr. ADAMS has retired from the US Navy and gone to live in the Philippines. I called Sensei Cauley and learnt this from him. Mr. Cauley gave me some confidence about Shorinji-Ryu Karate and some contacts in the style here near Miami. I am looking forward to getting involved again after a long period of being out. I am forever thankful to those teachers who, a long time ago, showed me the way. I believe I have been a better person because of them. Pedro Jiminez

I enjoy going back to your web site and learning about Karate. I have been a student of Shorinji-Ryu going back to 1972 with Steve Sulley who left Alaska in 1973 and went to Japan to learn Shorinji-Ryu and study with his Sensei Tom Cauley. I have been remiss in my practice, especially in Kobudo. I hope to be able to go to the National tournament this year. I have talked with Sensei Cauley on the telephone a number of times lately and he has given me the boot that I needed to get going again. Oh! did I mention that he demoted me two grades. Does anyone know where Steve Sulley is these days? Everyone, please keep up the daily practice. I am proud to be a member and will do my very best from now on. Work with EXXON has kept me away from Karate practice more than I needed. Sensei Cauley told me, on the phone, that "everyone has the same amount of time" It is how we use it that is most important. I was amazed at his technique and spirit. Mr. Cauley was a mirror image. Thank you Sensei for your guidance when I was young because it has come back to me in my old age now that I am fighting Cancer. I was your student in your military class at Korat, Thailand in 1966. I hope you remember me because you gave my a rough way to go. Boy that class was tough. Do you remember what ever happened to Patrick McDonnel? I still practice whenever I can and thank you for the hard knocks school. 38 years is a long time ago. I still have some pictures taken at that dojo. I still recall when that Royal Thai pilot kicked my front tooth out...turned out he was a muay thai boxer. I will send my email address under cover. I was a student of Bobby Jennings, who studied Shorinjiryu in Japan with Sensei Cauley during the early 1970's. While Mr. Jennings was stationed in the Air Force at Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska; he met Sensei Cauley. He continued to study Shorinjiryu when he was stationed at Misawa, Japan. I was a student of Mr. Jennings for four years here in Denton, Texas. I had to stop when my job demanded more of my time. I surfed onto this website and was very happy to learn about it. I met Sensei Cauley when he was in Orlando, Florida and Bobby brought me for the National tournament at the University of Central Florida. I sent Sensei Cauley an email message at his address and hope that I can get to your National Tournament next year in Tennessee. Good luck to all the Shorinjiryu students and teachers. I would like to comment about Shorinji-Ryu Karate. I am one of the Indian Representatives under the leadership of Honourable Sir Thomas Cauley of the International Division. He has trated my students and me with such respect and help over three years. He continues to offer any help possible even so much as to help 3 of my students and me to go to Japan. I just wanted to offer my sincerest thank you and respect for him and everyone who is in the Sakugawa Shorinji-Ryu Karate. I hope to go, also, to Sri Lanka and practise with the H.A.D. Last weekend I made a trip from Key West up to Orlando. I ran into one of the old students of Shorin Ji Ryu Karate from that area. His name, I believe, was Durrell. He told me about the hard training and long-term comittment to Karate when you are involved in Shorin Ji Ryu. I have been a student of Wado Ryu Karate for a number of years and am interested in learning about Shorin Ji Ryu and where I might go to practice. I assume that there are others in the South Florida area. I will email you at the address given in this website. Please advise me when you can... Sincerely, Brian Haskill

Great to see some of the old students of the Misawa, Japan dojo signing in. I, too, was a member of the Misawa dojo during 1967-69 when Tom Cauley taught there. I remember Davis, Leath and Mays too. What a hard practice we realized there. It was so cold you could not stand still..., Of course we didnt have that problem with Mr. Cauley and especially when Jiro Ogasawara came to class. Our greatest thrill was when we were allowed to train at Kamita-cho at the Head dojo. great to re-establish contact. Nolan

I surfed onto your website a couple of days ago and have been going back and forth to it since. I am an old student of Sakugawa Koshiki ShorinJiRyu Karate-do and studied in Japan in Cauley Sensei's dojo at Misawa. I was a member from 1967-1969 at the old BX building and then again when he returned to Misawa, Japan from 1974-1978. Since that time, I have retired from the USAF in the Office of Special Investigations and, at one time, worked for Captain Cauley. He was the liaison between the Japanese and American Governments something to do with inter-country relations. I consider myself one of the oldsters and can remember the hard practices both at the dojo on base and at the National headquarters with Mr. Ogasawara. I am happy to re-contact. To my surprise I found this web page while surfing for Japanese Arts and Ways. I was Tom Cauley's best friend during our early years when he began studing karate from a man named Asaki in Virginia Beach, Virginia in the summer about 1957. We also wrestled together at the old Virginia Beach High School (now defunct). What a treat to find him alive and well and living and teaching Karate in Tennessee. He must be going on at least 60-62 years old now. I am 61 and believe we are about the same age. It is rewarding to know that after so many years things really dont change that much. I have emailed Tom at his address and got his telephone number and talked at length. Sincerely, Wesley Quinn

I was surprised to find this web site about Sakugawa Koshiki Shorinjiryu Karatedo. I was a student of both Jiro Okada and Thomas Cauley, in Japan during my tour with the USAF from 1961-1965. I was stationed in the same USAF unit as Mr. Cauley, until he went to South Vietnam with an Air Force Commando outfit during 1965. I hooked up with him again during 1969 at Misawa Air Base, Japan. I became his student again and this time for 2 years. From that time, I have been a student and proponent of Shotokan Karatedo here in San Jose in the dojo of Kenneth Funakoshi. I have contacted Sensei Cauley in Tennessee by telephone and hope to attend your USA National Karatedo and Kobudo Shiai in Maryville, Tennessee this June. My congratulations on a very good web site. I was a student of Mr. Cauley during 1967-1969 at Misawa Air Base, Japan. We practiced in an old BX building which was not heated. I can not tell you how cold that place got in the bitter winter time. We did a lot of moving around back those days. I remember several others, Tony Mays (deceased) and Sugarmann Davis. Master Ogasawara visited sometimes and things even got worse in the dojo. I reflect with pleasure at the many hours I spent in the dojo at Misawa and the times Mr. Cauley took us to the Hombu in Kamita. Then, there was winter training in the mountains during the coldest time and summer training on the beach. Those teachings still are vivid. Freddie Detroit, Michigan

Greetings Sensei, I just started training again (after 23 years), in Shotokan, at a local dojo. I pulled out my copy of "The Universality of Karate and Kempo" to relearn my history and terminology and thought "I've never looked up Shorinjiryu or Mr. Cauley on the Web". What a delight to see Shorinjiryu (and yourself) so accessible. I've tried several times to replicate those magical days in the Orlando, Florida Hombu, with David Jones and Rob Moller, but without success. And at least once a week, I heed those your permanently ingrained instructions to me, "No Mr. Davies, your other left, your other left". Best wishes to you and yours. Michael V. Davids

Your shorinji-ryu is very interesting to me. I am currious to know more about the details of the Ogasawara Family and how they came up with the names of the Kata. They sound to me more like Shotokan names the Shorinji-ryu names. From my Travels to Okinowa and Japan, and my visits with, Zenryo Shimabukuro, Joen Nakazato, and the late Isamo Tomatsu. Those particular names which were mentioned on the video tape series, were not the Names used by "Bushi" Matsamura. There are also a much larger number of them than I have ever recalled mentioned. Any Who, I was just curious. Best Regards, Don Mathews

My name is George Martin, living and working in Santiago. I am from Ontario, California. I met Mister Anthony Marquez, 7th Dan, in Azusa, California a few years ago and learned about his style and his original style of Shorinjiryu. He is still active in Shorinjiryu also. He spoke very highly about everyone in this style. He related many stories about training in Japan and going to train with Mr. Cauley up north. He also told me first hand stories about how hard the training was in Japan and about the austure training camps run by Mr. Cauley and the senior members of the Honbu. Thanks to these men we can now learn Karate in a more pure form. I hope to, someday, get to the eastern USA and meet those seniors as well. Meantime, keep up the good work in Karatedo. Sincerely, George

My sincere congratulations on a real good website. I got out of Karate years ago due to an injury (not associated with Karate) but remember those old days with pleasure. I was stationed in the United States Force in Japan at Misawa Air Base. My best to OSensei Ogasawara and all the directors. Hello too, Tom Cauley, thanks for being such an understanding teacher years ago, it has made a positive impact on the life of everyone who touched you. Thanks Richard REllis@netzero.com

I was happy to find the webpages about Shorin Ji Ryu Karate-DO. I first studied Karate when I was deliverer of the Newspaper at Misawa Air Base, Japan about `1970' I practice still at Headquarter school in Kamita cho. I learnt about Shorin Ji Ryu too at the Base when Mr. Cauley taught the American dojo there. I loved the days of old Shorin Ji Ryu. Today I am grandfather of 3 boy. I enjoy the pages about Shorinjiryu Karate. I once met Master Jiro Ogasawara in the Philippines. I also met and heard about Mister Thomas Cauley who was his student from America. Today, I am happy to learn that he is still alive and well and doing the Karate of Ogasawara in America. He was very kind to me about 35 or 36 years ago. I worked in the Clark Air Base Hospital and he was there from Vietnam. We spoke a long time about Karate. I was a student of the Doshin Kai then. I am now a student of Shorinjiryu and am happy to find others. Sincerely, Jose Diaz 5th Dan diazkarate@jomon.cc.ph

Much to my surprise, I surfed onto this website and found an old friend and Karate teacher, Tom Cauley. I hope he remembers me. I was stationed with the United States Air Force at Fuchu Air Station, Japan in 1964. I met Tom after watching a Karate exhibition at the base. I remember him as being the only American in a Japanese class. Later on, during 1964 (fall) I was in a couple of college classes with him. I lost track of him when he went to Saigon, South Vietnam during 1965. Periodically, I would hear about him in Karate circles. I have emailed him and hope to re-establish contact. I read, with interest, Mr. Ed Robinson's entry. He related that he met Mr. Cauley at Yokota Air Base Japan at the Military Airlift Command's Terminal building. About that time I also met Mr. Cauley and had a similar experience as that of Mr. Robinson. I was stationed at Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture and met Mr. Cauley after watching one of his demonstrations at the Base Gym on Armed Forces Day. His kindness, patience, and caring immediately struck me. Eventually, I became one of his students. Although for a short time before the US Navy sent me San Diego, I was able to learn a great deal about Budo from Mr. Cauley. He was one of those lucky souls who got to live and practice in Japanese dojos. I have always thought about him and what he gave to me in form of values and spirit. What a wonderful surprise it was to stumble across this web site. I will never forget the first time I met Sensei Cauley...I was 14...skinny...and nervous. I watched a class in the gym on Dover Air Force Base and spoke with him as he changed after class. I will never forget him telling me..."I reserve the right to tell you to leave at anytime".I knew he meant it....and he never had to tell me.He changed my life in ways I will never forget...He helped to instill values and strength in me that even today I borrow from and know without them life would be so difficult. Even though I haven't trained in the martial arts in a decade...I still consider myself a martial arist. Not because of what I do...but because of what is in me. My hat is off to this man and my head is bowed in respect. Thank you Sensei.

Interesting site, in particular the section about etiquette, where the riding wear is allowed after black belt! I read in an Aikido site that the Karate Gi in its purest form was actually only underwear and if you step on the mat without the Hakama in some clubs shows impropriety. There are arguments that this piece of clothing should be worn by all ranks especially in Japanese Dojos. In Europe however and especially in Wado Ryu we don't traditionally wear this garnment even after shodan. Keep up the good work! Yours in Budo, Oliver J.

I surfed onto your site looking at different Karate entries. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a wealth of information about Japanese Karate, links to other interesting pages and of course, an excellent representation of Shorinji Ryu Karate. I practice Shotokan but knew of Cauley Shihan when he was stationed with the Air Force in Japan during the early 60's and kept up with him through his later years in Northern Japan during the 70's. I come from the old Japan Karate Association system from Hironishi Sensei and believe that Cauley Sensei learnt from Ueki Shihan. Keep up the fine work. I believe that I am possibly the oldest dojo mate of Tom Cauley. We studied together under Masayuki Asaki in Virginia Beach during 1957. We started Karate of Shorin- Ji-ryu from him that summer on Atlantic Avenue. I still live in Virginia Beach but have not remained as active as Mr. Cauley. I would be happy to answer any email from his present students. I learnt about his upcoming National Tournament in Tennessee by word of mouth. I will try my best to go. I came across this Site surfing the WEB. I was surprised and elated to find information about Mr. Cauley and the Sakugawa orthodox Shorinji Ryu Karate style. I was a member of the Shorinji Ryu Dojo at Khorat Royal Thai AFB, Korat, Thailand, during 1966. Mr. Cauley was the Sensei in charge. I cannot believe it has been 33 long years ago. I also remember others like Joseph Stiner, a Judoka, and Snoopy (dont remember his real name) in the Karate dojo. We worked outside a lot in Thailand but our main dojo was in an old chow hall on base. I recall, also, that there were many Thai Air Force members from Camp Suranari. I remember, also, Sawan Poogsai, who teaches in Thailand now. Good luck to everyone and I still try to practice Shorinji Ryu as best I can. Bill Sterman Tucson, Arizona

Tom, What a great website...Just a great as your karate of the old days of the 60's-early 70's, when we both supported many tourneys as we participated in each other, mine in New Canaan, Ct. and yours at Dover AFB, Del.. Now, with my own developed art of Chairo-Kan Bushi Shindo and you with your art we continue to strengthen the arts through of knowledge and wisdom of the past years. Fran (wife / Soke-Dai) and myself are preparing our upcoming Hall of Fame for May 21, 2000 here in Norwalk, Ct and plan to honor such great people like you then and to bring together our pioneers who have dedicated so many years to the development of the arts we have today. God bless you, the family and students from Fran and myself.
